Iceland, officially the Republic of Iceland (['a?sl?nd]) (Icelandic Ísland or Lýðveldið Ísland (names of Iceland); IPA&_160;['istlant]), is an island country in Northern Europe, located in the North Atlantic Ocean between mainland Europe and Greenland.[3] It is the least populous of the Nordic countries and the second smallest; it has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km².[4] Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík.

Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is volcanically and geologically active on a large scale; this defines the landscape in various ways. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterized by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many big glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Iceland has a temperate climate relative to its latitude and provides a habitable environment and nature.

The settlement of Iceland began in 874 when, according to Landnámabók, the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson became the first permanent Norwegian settler on the island.[5] Others had visited the island earlier and stayed over winter. Over the next centuries, people of Nordic and Gaelic origin settled in Iceland. Until the twentieth century, the Icelandic population relied on fisheries and agriculture, and was from 1262 to 1918 a part of the Norwegian and later the Danish monarchies. In the twentieth century, Iceland's economy and welfare system developed quickly. In recent decades, Iceland has implemented free trade in the European Economic Area and diversified from fishing to new economic fields in services, finance, and various industries.

Today, Iceland has some of the world's highest levels of economic and civil freedoms.[6] As of 2007, Iceland is ranked as the most developed country in the world by the United Nations' Human Development Index.[7] It is also the fourth most productive country per capita, and one of the most egalitarian, as rated by the Gini coefficient.[8][9] Icelanders have a rich culture and heritage, such as cuisine and poetry, and the medieval Icelandic Sagas are internationally renowned. Iceland is a member of the UN, NATO, EFTA, EEA and OECD, but not of the European Union. The country is a candidate for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council.

Europe is a place for the true romantics. Here are out top five picks for honeymooning couples. 3. Lets all go to Iceland
October 30, 2008

Visit Iceland and help them crawl out of their current economical disastrous state, the value of the Krona has plummeted recently and holiday goers are cashing in. The average price of a beer has fallen from a chilling £7 to a more familiar £2.50 which we are used to at home. Iceland has 320,000 inhabitants living in its 130,000 squared kilometres with its capital Reykjavik hosting around 150,000 people. Iceland has always been seen as an expensive destination due to its breath taking experiences and views such as the northern lights and geothermic pools. Iceland is one of the hardes... (read more)

If you have been considering a trip to Iceland, now would be the best time to go. The following article explains why. I know that for many people, millions of people, times are tough. But if you have the notion and the wherewithal, I want to point out a real travel bargain – Iceland. Iceland is normally a very expensive travel destination. But, in my view, as someone who has lived and worked in that country, it has always been worth it. It is a very exotic and beautiful country. 5. The state of Kaupthing, HSBC, Lloyds, Abbey and Barclays
October 20, 2008

The Icelandic government decided to nationalise the Kaupthing's parent bank which went into technical default. "It did not matter that the parent company had sufficient liquidity and its position was solid," commented someone from Kaupthing before the entire board resigned. On this, Fitch Ratings added "In light of recent events, the ability and propensity of the Icelandic authorities to support the banking system remain increasingly compromised". Despite Iceland’s banking assets account about nine times the island GDP; this would not be enough to cover their debts, considering the imminent ba... (read more)

October 14, 2008

Bjork Concert Tickets : Heaven Sent For Us Mere Mortals The President of Iceland got it right in 1997 - he conferred on Bjork the title of Lady, for services to her country. Lady Bjork started as a new age punk princess and her incredible voice got her an album deal at the age of 11. She then sang in various anarchic punk bands in Iceland until she hit the bigtime with The Sugarcubes. Her addictive new age dance music ("Big Time Sensuality" and "Human Behaviour") propelled her to goddesshood and made her not just Bjork Gudmundsdottir (the name she was born with) but simply "Bj... October 14, 2008

“Cornerstone Worldwide”– Big payouts predicted for sellers of Icelandic bank CDS. Cornerstone Worldwide are thought to believe that the failure of three Icelandic banks will force sellers of CDS contracts protecting against their default to absorb large payouts running into hundreds of billions of dollars. Sources close to Cornerstone Worldwide say that the recent auctions of Lehman Brothers debt which fetched under 9 cents on the dollar left sellers with obligations to pay £300bn and that Iceland’s banks’ debt may fetch less. 8. Trading Forex - Icelandic Krona troubles.
October 13, 2008

It is hard to believe, that events in a small country with a population of just 320,000 people could have world wide effect. Flooded with a deluge of information during first 10 days of October, most traders probably didn't even register what was happening in Iceland. Yet it might have been there, according to some market watchers, where the current financial turmoil began. Over last few years Icelandic Krona has been very high yielding currency, paying more than 15%. For this reason, it has been popular choice in the "carry" play enjoyed by many traders against mainly Japanese Yen a... (read more)

9. A Simple Guide To Traveling In Iceland
October 07, 2008

Iceland is a very small country, with slightly over three hundred thousand people living in it. But being small doesn't stop thousands of tourists from flocking to this beautiful country for sight seeing purposes. That is because the country is naturally endowed with many natural attractions, such as beautiful lakes, beaches, and hiking trails. One can expect to see breath-taking scenes of wide open fields, with horses grazing or galloping around, and beautiful bodies of water such as lakes, valleys and waterfalls. The name itself may come across as kind of strange, because the country i... (read more)

10. My Love/Hate Relationship with Iceland
September 16, 2008

I was originally going to title this article, “Why I like Iceland” But the truth is that title doesn’t express my true feelings about this country. The truth is far more complex. There’s a great line in one of my favorite movies, “Lawrence of Arabia,” where Lawrence is speaking to Auda, the leader of the Howeitat, who is very effectively convincing him to join him in his battle against the Turks – something he didn’t know he wanted to do but ends up agreeing to anyways. In the end, Auda, realizing that his mind has been changed for him, says to Lawrence, “You trouble me like women.” T... (read more)

11. Bobbi Jo's Review of the First-ever World Class Driving Festival
September 10, 2008

This weekend my husband and I went to West Baden Springs Hotel for the first World Class Driving Festival in Indiana. As for the West Baden Springs Hotel, the first class accommodations were simply wonderful. This property was recently restored in a $450 million project. The character and charm of the 1902’s shines through as a result of their brilliant renovation. The 200–foot-diameter Grand Atrium in and of itself is an amazing work of art, so having so many exotic cars displayed in such a glorious setting really was a brilliant idea and a vision of delight for car enthusiasts. Kudos to... (read more)

12. Getting Away from it All
September 03, 2008

There is a lesser-known small island in the North Atlantic called Iceland where you can still get away from it all and experience nature in a near pristine state. That is just what I needed. Iceland is a country roughly the size of Kentucky but with a lot fewer people. It is located a little below the Arctic Circle roughly between Greenland and the United Kingdom and about a 5-hour flight from the East coast of the US. It has a population of just over three hundred thousand people which means that the population density is very low. Population numbers and geography aside, Iceland... (read more)

July 16, 2008

Many nations, states and private entities are scrambling to secure their respective energy futures in the face of growing oil prices, coupled with growing demand. A long overdue paradigm shift is emerging, a significant move towards renewable energy development. Many are taking a fresh look at geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is nothing new, no more so than many of the so-called renewable energies. July 13, 2008

Deciding on the right engagement ring can be an extremely tough decision. Careful consideration must therefore be given. The Big Decision The decision to give someone an engagement ring is potentially one of the biggest decisions of a person’s life. This is because an engagement ring represents the notion that one person is declaring their love to another and wants to spend the rest of their life with them. The eventual aim is to get married and as the fairytale depicts live happily ever after. This is all well and good but before they can get marred they must first get engaged. ... (read more)

20. Hydropower in Iceland - Earth Friendly or Not?
June 03, 2008

The development of hydropower in Iceland has not been without controversy. There are vocal pundits and laypersons on both sides of the debate. So, is hydropower in Iceland a green energy or do the liabilities outweigh the assets? It seems to me that hydropower is one of those renewable energies on the fringe of those energy sources considered green, i.e. having minimal impact on the environment. Humans have been harnessing water power in one form or another for centuries. But let’s face it our sheer numbers and technological advancements are crowding out nature with deleterious effects... 21. Iceland, a Global Leader in Renewable Energy
May 19, 2008

Iceland may not be top of mind for many but they do have claim to some very interesting statistics. Not the least of which is their dominance in the area of renewable or green energy utilization for energy production. In the area of renewable energy, Iceland is one of the world leaders. Currently, renewable or green energy sources provide 72% of the country’s electricity needs. And, Iceland is one of the few countries with plans to completely wean themselves off of fossil fuels in the near term. Iceland derives this energy from two main renewable sources, geothermal and hydroelectr... (read more)

I am spending the next four months in Iceland, during the time when the sun doesn’t set till quite late and I am having trouble sleeping. I needed some serious help. Last month I moved to Iceland for a temporary work assignment. All-in-all, it has been fine and I have been excited about living in a new place and all that usually comes with new experiences. 23. Wrath of Gods starring Gerard Butler (an enthralling adventure in filmmaking)
May 12, 2008

Nothing is quite as intriguing as the fascinating world of moviemaking. Most interesting are the stories of productions told in documentaries that capture the filmmaker's vision and dreams powered by what seems psychotic obsession to bring production to a wrap while overcoming huge obstacles at every turn. Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe's Lost In la Mancha brought us the failed attempt by Terri Gilliam to film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote", Les Blank's "Burden of Dreams" about the chaotic production of Werner Herzog's epic 'Fitzcarraldo' deep in the Amazon jungle, and Fax Bahr and George Hicke... The art of creating movies is as unique and individual as the finger prints on our hands. 25. Hiking Vacation Idea
May 05, 2008

Some people’s idea of a vacation is to lounge around on the beach with a cocktail in their hands and there’s nothing wrong with that. But for some of us a challenging new hike is preferred. There are great places to hike all over the world. My personal preference is in cooler wetter climates; I am not a big fan of deserts or super hot and humid climates. I find it easier to get warm than it is to get cool - to each their own. Anyways, earlier this year I took a hiking vacation in Iceland. I am not sure how aware most Americans are of this tiny island nation. But, the bottom line is, if ... (read more)
