The Danube (In German Donau from earlier Danuvius, Celtic *danu, meaning "to flow, run", Slovak and Polish Dunaj, Hungarian Duna, Romanian Dunarea, Old Norse Duná, Turkish Tuna, ancient Greek Istros, Croatian Dunav, Serbian ?????/Dunav, Bulgarian ?????, Ukrainian ?????) is the longest river in the European Union and Europe's second longest river after the Volga. It originates in the Black Forest in Germany as the much smaller Brigach and Breg rivers which join at the eponymously named German town Donaueschingen, after which it is known as the Danube and flows eastwards for a distance of some 2850 km (1771 miles), passing through several Central and Eastern European capitals, before emptying into the Black Sea via the Danube Delta in Romania and Ukraine. Known to history as one of the long-standing frontiers of the Roman Empire, the river flows through — or forms a part of the borders of — ten countries Germany (7.5%), Austria (10.3%), Slovakia (5.8%), Hungary (11.7%), Croatia (4.5%), Serbia (10.3%), Romania (28.9%), Bulgaria (5.2%), Moldova (1.7%), and Ukraine (3.8%) In addition, the drainage basin includes parts of nine more countries Italy (0.15%), Poland (0.09%), Switzerland (0.32%), Czech Republic (2.6%), Slovenia (2.2%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (4.8%), Montenegro, Republic of Macedonia, and Albania (0.03%). The English language has, since the Norman invasion, used the French word Danube. In other languages, particularly those spoken in the countries the river flows through

The city is divided into two sides by the river, with the old centre and many major attractions lying on the south-western side. 6. Exploits of the Dwarf Seeker in Kranjska Gora
July 10, 2008
You could barely remember what he said but it was something about the Danubian culture. Unfortunately for your father, you are more familiar with the Danube Dance. Besides, Slovenia's rich history and culture are not the reasons why the family packed the luggage and duffel bags, boarded a plane and landed at the Klagenfurt Airport in Austria, and then spent the next 40 minutes driving to the Zgornjesavka Valley where the Kranjska Gora ski resort is located.
Nestled by the peak of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Mountains, the family was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is not a... (read more)

When it comes to Brits going abroad - Germany isn't the first place to spring to mind as a top holiday destination. 9th district a prize pick for Budapest property investors [part II]
In my last article on Budapest property, I focused on the regeneration of the Danube riverside in the city’s 9th district as a potential hotspot for Budapest property investors. But, as I alluded to in that article, it’s not just the new builds and office developments lining the quayside that are of interest in this inner city area. Indeed, the whole of the 9th district is ‘work in progress’ and as such offers superb value for money to investors looking for an affordable way in to the Budapest property market.

14. Budapest property prices set to boom in the city's 9th district riverside
January 07, 2008
Of particular interest in the Budapest property market right now is the 9th district of the city. Development there has been quiet, yet constant, for several years but it really has exploded recently. In fact the hitherto semi-derelict area of the Danube riverside between the Lágymányosi Bridge and Petofi bridge is now beginning to finally fulfil its undisputed potential as a centre of premium residential and commercial Budapest property.
Walking through the 9th district recently, the main thing that struck me is the sheer pace of development, particularly around Boraross Square and along... (read more)

16. The First Great Space Movie
December 28, 2007
I remember the first time that I saw this film in 1968, I was in Korea and I can still picture the fantastic special effects. I credit this film with introducing me to the Johann Strauss waltz “Blue Danube,' which accompanies the docking of the space shuttle and the space station. It was a slow and deliberate movement filled with awe inspiring scenery and great music. Stanley Kubrick was a genius of a film maker and this is one of his very best works.
The major theme of this movie was mankind finds a mysterious, obviously artificial, artifact buried on the moon and, with the intelligent c... (read more)

17. Spa and Wellness in Budapest
December 14, 2007
One of the very special things about Budapest is the prevalence of thermal springs right in the centre of the city. There are 118 springs and boreholes altogether, supplying the city’s spas and baths with 15.4 million gallons of water daily ranging in temperature from 70 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit (21-78°C). One of the reasons the Romans first colonized the area immediately to the west of the River Danube and established their regional capital at Aquincum (now part of Óbuda, in northern Budapest) is so that they could utilize and enjoy the thermal springs. There are still ruins visible today ... (read more)

I have traveled all over the world and enjoyed Wine Food Pairing in some delightful spots. This adventure took me to Linz, Austria, where we visited a Greek restaurant just outside the city, perched atop a small cliff with a terrific view of the Danube, or Donau, as it is called in Austria. AIONYSOS was highly recommended by several of our friends in the area and by the time we arrived it was peak dinner hour. The place was more than packed…always a sign that the food is great. We came in and were greeted by a host who took our name and handed us a shot of ouzo while we waited….you have ... (read more)

25. Beautiful Budapest: The Pearl of the Danube
June 12, 2007
As the capital city of Hungary, Budapest is fast emerging as one of the world’s most vibrant cities and in shrugging off its fractured past, has also become an important cultural centre. In its infancy, Budapest was actually two separate cities – The Roman city of Buda and the Bulgarian-ruled city of Pest – which were situated on either side of the River Danube. Until its amalgamation as a single city, both sides were subject to many different claims of control. In recent times, Budapest had been under communist rule enforced by the Soviet Union after World War II but with the fall of t... (read more)
