About 1,300; see List of Acacia speciesAcacias are also known as thorntrees, whistling thorns or wattles, including the yellow-fever acacia and umbrella acacias. There are roughly 1300 species of Acacia worldwide, about 960 of them native to Australia, with the remainder spread around the tropical to warm-temperate regions of both hemispheres, including Europe, Africa, southern Asia, and the Americas. The genus Acacia is evidently not monophyletic. This discovery has led to the breaking up of Acacia into 5 new genera as discussed in List of Acacia species. In common parlance, the term "acacia" is occasionally misapplied to species of the genus Robinia, which also belongs in the pea family. Robinia pseudoacacia, an American species locally known as Black locust, is sometimes called "false acacia" in cultivation in the United Kingdom.

1. Olerai House Hotel
September 24, 2009
Olerai House Hotel is a beautiful country hotel set on the shores of Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Painted ochre-red, it nestles under yellow acacia trees and purple jacarandas and is fanned by a cool breeze from the shores of Lake Naivasha. It’s watched over in the far distance by the extinct blue volcano of Mount Longonot. There is no better way to arrive for a Kenya safari holiday than to be met at the Nairobi airport, not by driver tour guide but a private pilot and be flown out across the Great Rift Valley landing thirty minutes later on a beautiful farm in ... 2. The Big Five & More
July 21, 2009
Byline: Danielle Bruce “goes overland to experience more of East Africa” Swathes of cloud fell around the rim of the crater, the early morning mist and high altitude vapours bringing a slight chill to the crisp clean air. Perched on the lip of what is known as “Africa’s Eden,” I gazed down from our camp, foggy patches casting thick shadows over the vast caldera floor.Africa is a timeless place, and even moreso when it comes to the Ngorongoro Crater – a spectacular bowl that was carved into the earth’s surface over 10,000 years ago by Mother Nature’s hand. Spanning around 265-sqm and reachi... (read more)

3. Egypt Uncovered
July 21, 2009
Byline: Tom Fielding “finds a more mystical Egypt that is still waiting to be discovered” A vast expanse of sand stretched out before me, the fine soft grains covered in abstract monoliths of all shapes and sizes. For a moment, I felt as though I had been transported onto the film set of a “Star Wars” movie. All I needed now was my son’s light saber and you could call me Luke Skywalker. The rock-strewn landscape glittered like gold in the midday sun, the harsh rays bouncing off the twisted structures. Eager to get a birds eye view of Egypt’s mystical White Desert we left the 4X4 ... 4. My girlfriend's first Leopard
July 21, 2009
After more than 5 years of going out together, my girlfriend Kristy finally persuaded me that we should try a holiday in Africa. As I'm constantly travelling back and forth to Africa for work we usually holiday elsewhere in the world - but after deep thought (over a beer) and serious negotiation (over 10 beers) we decided to travel there in September/October 2008. Our safari started in Uganda and would finish in Tanzania via Kenya. Everything was going great guns and she was falling in love with Africa as I had many years before. A great bonus for me was that we were seeing many things in Afr... (read more)

5. 7 Favourite Drought Tolerant, Australian Natives Plants.
June 15, 2009
The words “drought tolerant plants” have different meanings to different gardeners. I once knew a gardener who believed if a plant was considered to be drought tolerant it meant that once you’d planted it you could then walk away and never have to water it again. The funny thing about it, in some respects this can be the case with some drought tolerant plants, in some situations.
If you are a gardener though who wants to give your plants a better that even chance of surviving their first summer then here is the best way to go about it.
I’ve always found that the best time of the year... (read more)

6. Where You Can Find Your Bouquets
February 26, 2009
In the Victorian era, the bride and groom would send bouquets to each other to convey secret meanings. Each flower meant something different, such as carnations for "love and devotion," chrysanthemums for "wealth and truth," the lily for "majesty and honor," tulips for "love and passion," daisies for "beauty," amaryllis for "pride, determination and radiant beauty" and yellow acacia for "secret love."
Today, bouquets of flowers are sent as a gesture of good will and thoughtfulness, but that is not all. Balloons, chocolates, teddy bears, candy and other gifts can be sent as well. Thanks t... (read more)

10. Africa Adventures
May 29, 2007
Does anything quite prepare you for an adventure in Africa; quite simply, nothing can, as my experience on Acacia’s overland South West Safari would lead me to discover. Our tour through Southern Africa began in Zambia and on arrival into Livingstone we were transferred to our accommodation on the banks of the Zambezi River, a few miles upstream from the Victoria Falls. Arriving in plenty of time before the tour began I made the most of the opportunities available in the area – this being one of Africa’s adventure capitals offering a range of activities, from bungee jumping to sunset cruising... 14. Western Kilimanjaro to Southern Serengeti
October 11, 2005
This safari is centered on the plains of Western Kilimanjaro and then moves across to the remote Southern Serengeti. Western Kilimanjaro camp is set in a private concession which means just that – it is private and not a public park. It covers 75,000 acres and borders Kenya's Amboseli National Park. The landscapes here consist of floodplains, hills and acacia woodland. This destination is amazing as the camp is luxurious and game spotting is done against the dramatic back-drop of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the evening enjoy the stars of the southern sky and the amazing sight of Mount Kilimanjar... (read more)

15. Acacia
February 16, 2004
(ka´sh) , any plant of the large leguminous genus Acacia, often thorny shrubs and trees of the family Leguminosae (pulse family). Chiefly of the tropics and subtropics, they are cultivated for decorative and economic purposes. Acacias are characteristic of savanna vegetation and are especially numerous in the South African bushveld. The foliage often appears feathery because of the many small leaflets, but in some species leaflike flattened stems contain chlorophyll and take the place of leaves. Various Old World species (especially A. arabica and A. senegal ) yield gum arabic; other species, ... (read more)
