Clergyman William Gregor discovered titanium in 1791. However, Austrian chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth identified it as a new element in 1795. He named it titanium after the Titans, the Greek Gods, and gave it the number 22.Titanium, a naturally occurring element, is found in the crust of the Earth. Mining separates it from the surrounding elements to leave a sponge-like material that is made into castings or bars before being turned into jewelry and other products.
